Why I choose to Walk and Support Team Thrive+
Over 25 years, a lot can happen in one’s life that will impact their mind, body, and soul and pave the way for a lifetime of experiences, challenges, fears, excitement, and an all too close self-awareness and understanding of one’s own aging process and purpose in life.
Since my coming out and seroconversion in 1993, one cause that has been foremost in my life, and one that has changed me for the better I believe, has been my life education, passion, and compassion for understanding HIV and AIDS and its associated illnesses.
As I turn the page into my 58th year, I am all too aware of the immense need to further understand how aging with HIV can affect your body, mind, soul, and a healthy longevity. The amount of personal fortitude that was/is needed to constantly stay abreast of the changes that come with aging is often times daunting, but thankfully with groups like the HIV + Aging Research Project – Palm Springs (HARP-PS), the future looks bright.
Many of the health issues that come with aging and a mature body, if you’re HIV positive, then those health concerns and issues arrive 10-15 years earlier than someone who’s HIV negative. So, the need for research and funding to understand the aging process related to HIV and AIDS is more needed today than ever before. This research is conducted through partnerships and studies aligned with the medical community here in the Coachella Valley, but the impact of the future results will reach nationally if not globally. The predominance of aging individuals living with and affected by HIV here in the Coachella Valley is greater than any other city in our nation.
It’s for this main reason that I joined the board of directors for the HIV + Aging Research Project, and why I’m self-disclosing, and heavily promoting our collective efforts with fundraising through Team Thrive+ (representing HIV+Aging Research Project) to support the care services of Desert AIDS Project through AIDS Walk 2018. When you donate to our team page, HARP-PS will receive one-third of the total amount raised to be used for our HIV and Aging research studies.
